R. John Young, Ph.D. recognized a need for a company that would address the human factors impacting individual effectiveness, productivity and profitability. As founder and director of an institute that was part of one of the largest medical centers in the Southeast United States, he knew how important the health and well-being of employees are to an organization. Therefore, in 1987 Dr. Young founded Corporate Health Services, Inc. in Charlotte, NC.

At the time, Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) were not as well-known as they are today. Dr. Young was at the forefront of the industry as he recognized and respected the value of the individual employee to an organization. He founded and developed an EAP that responded to all the classical needs, but also was interested in thinking about the health of the organization at large.

"We had observed how many EAPs are single-issue oriented. Besides addressing the traditional problems, we also support the other initiatives. We think about how addressing personal issues will enable the organization to be more successful and profitable," says Dr. Young. "Therefore, the value proposition of our EAP is much richer."

From the company's inception, Dr. Young required that all counselors hold advanced degrees in counseling or its related fields. "We insisted on a whole different level of professionalism from our counselors," says Dr. Young. "Our counselors must be able to link the dots between where distress presents itself to its origins. Sometimes the causes are individual problems, but sometimes they are linked to the organization since pain is always referred."

In 1990 Corporate Health Services had evolved from a local to an international provider and expanded its focus to include consulting services for executives. At that time, McLaughlin Young Consulting was formed, and Corporate Health Services' name was changed to Corporate Health International, with both companies residing under the new McLaughlin Young Group name. In 2005 Corporate Health International was renamed McLaughlin Young Employee Services to reflect the broad bandwidth of products and services available within the McLaughlin Young Group member companies and to align these companies under a single brand name.

In 2007 the McLaughlin Young Group celebrated 20 Years of Improving Performance.  Today, McLaughlin Young Employee Services continues to offer an array of services addressing the human factor issues impacting employees.
